7 Things To Do When Visiting Sunday River, Maine

Travel to Maine and take a ‘Pitt Stop’ for some Yeti sightings, frozen ice princesses, and awesome skiing at Sunday River. And yes, I said Yeti sightings! We have been visiting Newry, Maine and skiing at Sunday River for years. However, this isn’t an area just for skiers and riders. We also travel with non-skiers, and there is never a lack of things for everyone to do. Read our top 7 things to do when visiting Sunday River, Maine, and watch our experience in the travel vlog below!

1. Stay at the Jordan Hotel & Swim in the Outdoor Pool & Jacuzzi

The Jordan Hotel is a ski-in-ski-out accommodation located right off the Jordan Bowl, one of Sunday River’s 8 Mountain Peaks. The Jordan is a large hotel with two restaurants, a bar, day care, swim-in/swim-out heated pool with two outdoor hot tubs, spa, steam room, and sauna. It hosts cool events like weekly fireworks, specialty drink tastings in the lobby, and more. A little advice: if weather is foreboding, make sure you have an AWD/4WD car, as the Jordan is the highest and snowiest location at Sunday River. 2. Go Yeti Hunting

According to legend, a Yeti has lived on Old Speck Mountain by Sunday River for decades. There is an Enchanted Forest Trail on North Peak where skiers and riders can visit Eddy the Yeti’s designated home and sign the guestbook for laughs. You may be laughing then, but watch out for Yeti X-ing areas on the roads. You could seriously wreck your car! You think hitting a moose is bad, try hitting a Yeti!

3. Ski at Sunday River

With 8 interconnected mountain peaks, 135 trails and glades, 15 lifts, 6 ski parks, and 22 double-blacks and 41 greens, it’s hard for any New England mountain to compete with Sunday River. Should I also mention the views of both Mount Washington and the Mahoosuc Range are incredible? 4. Après at the Foggy Goggle

5. Head to Bethel & Eat Dinner at Suds Pub 

Bethel is the town next to Newry, and has a bunch of options for dining, late-night music, and shopping. One of our favorite, yearly must-dos is to visit Suds Pub in the basement of the Sudbury Inn. This is more of a dive restaurant and bar, where you are bound to meet a few usuals, can try one of 29 beers on tap, hear live music, and experience the authentic rustic feel of a ‘locals’ ski bar. 6. Late Night at the Matterhorn Ski Bar

The Matterhorn Ski Bar is a friendly, rowdy bar and restaurant with pub food and a great beer selection. They offer late-night live music on their large stage while also catering to families earlier in the night with a fully stocked arcade. The coolest part about the bar is the decor – there are approximately 900 skis on the wall, trail signs and maps from all over the world, and a Ski Bar Hall Of Fame, with memorabilia from famous skiers and riders. The neat part about staying at Sunday River is how they provide on-mountain resort shuttles and a regional Mountain Explorer shuttle so you can go to the different bars in the resort area without having to worry about finding a driver. 7. Stop in Portland to Eat at Flatbread Company’s Restaurant

An awesome “Pitt Stop” for food on our road trip was Flatbread Company’s pizza restaurant. We Yelped restaurants on our route, and saw Flatbread’s had over 300 reviews and extraordinary ratings. When we arrived, we walked in and were shocked by the stunning water views, open kitchen, and trendy decor. Our waiter was friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the company, and listed all the reason why Flatbread’s was the best food in Portland. He wasn’t lying either. Everything was organic, fresh, and delicious. We ate a ton of food, and somehow didn’t even feel full! My salad was crisp, fresh, and loaded with flavor, and the pizza was the same.
